On first glance photos of this happy couple appear to depict an extremely conventional pairing, however Katie Hill and Arin Andrews first met while both were going through gender transitions.
They first crossed paths back in 2012 as teenagers and fell deeply in love, supporting each other through what was undoubtedly a difficult time in their lives. Together they documented their journeys online and accumulated quite a following along the way.
Arin, now 19, and Katie, 21, have since broken it off romantically, but the bond between them is as strong as ever. The pair are at the center of BBC3’s new documentary “Young, Trans and Looking for Love” which tells the stories of the struggles transgender youths experience every day; as well as explores the concept of gender in modern society.
“I don’t think anyone unless they know our story would come to the conclusion that we’re a trans man and a trans woman dating,” Katie said. “They would just see us as a boy and a girl dating.”
Arin explains his sexuality saying, “I’ve always loved women and liked women as a female because I’ve always deep down known that I was straight male.”
This is a picture of Arin as a child, who was born Emerald Andrews:
The other teens depicted in the documentary cite Arin and Katie’s story as being a great inspiration for them.
Trans woman Claire Green from Virginia is struggling to find someone to call her own. In the clip she is seen explaining how she feels that straight men are not interested in her once they discover she is trans.
“I’ve met a lot of douchebags and jerks and I really want to meet a gentleman. Most guys I’ve met, I’ve met them one time literally and then after that nothing. I’ve never had an actual relationship and it’s kind of odd for me like how. What is the issue?
“In a lot of ways I don’t like telling a guy because once I tell him it’s like all respect goes out the window. Straight guys just can’t get over you having the male parts. I would just like someone to spend time with, to cuddle and just do little things, the little things mean the most to me.”
