For many making gingerbread houses is a beloved holiday tradition – the smell of freshly baked goods and royal icing, topped with gumdrop shingles and candy cane shutters – but one family chose to take a rather sinister twist on this innocuous practice by recreating the Overlook Hotel from the famous movie “The Shining”.
With a lot of patience and imagination, the family was able to construct a seriously impressive edible replica of the haunted mansion. They then shared photos of their masterpiece to Reddit where it got the respect it deserves.
“We worked on and off for about two weeks,” Reddit user agkeeling wrote “My dad does all of the design from photos. We do one nearly every year – no duplicates.”
Inside the house they carefully staged iconic scenes from the Stanley Kubrick film, such as the iconic “Here’s Johnny!” scene with Jack Nicholson and Shelley Duvall and the ghostly twins in the hallway.
Outside they created a hedge maze using Rice Krispy treats, and coated the grounds in snow.
Each room is set up with such care and attention to detail, down to the wallpaper printed on edible paper and the blood created from melted Jolly Ranchers.
What an amazing project! I just have one question: Are they going to have a “The Shining” viewing party and invite their friends over to eat it?
