Taylor Swift: ‘I’m The National Lightning Rod For Slut Shaming’

April 22, 2016 - By Jenna Lorraine

In an interview done in her Beverly Hills home for Vogue’s 73 Questions web series, Taylor Swift described herself as a “national lightning rod for slut shaming.”

When asked “What’s the one thing you wish you knew at 19?” Swift responds that the one thing she was not prepared for was the criticism of her dating life.

“If I could talk to my 19-year-old self I’d just say, ‘Hey, you’re going to date just like a normal twenty-something should be allowed to, but you’re going to be a national lightning rod for slut-shaming,'” the 26-year-old explains.

“You know, I went out on a normal amount of dates in my early 20s, and I got absolutely slaughtered for it,” she says.

“And it took a lot of hard work and altering my decision-making. I didn’t date for two-and-a-half years. Should I have had to do that? No.”

There’s no doubt that Swift got herself a reputation as a man-killer early on in her career, and her past relationships and the alleged songs they inspired are still a constant source of jokes.

Swift has addressed the fact that despite many songwriters drawing from their personal experiences for inspiration, she is one of the few who has received so much tabloid attention for it.

“No one says that about Ed Sheeran. No one says that about Bruno Mars. They’re all writing about their exes, their current girlfriends, their love life and no one raises a red flag there,” the young star said back in 2014 in an interview with 2dayFM’s Jules, Merrick and Sophie show.
