The Citi Strata Premier is the latest and greatest card from Citi. It features solid earning rates on everyday spending categories such as air travel, hotel purchases, restaurants, supermarkets, gas, and even EV charging stations. With a low annual fee, we view it as a solid, mid-tiered card no matter if you like to earn rewards on travel or just on your everyday activities. Additionally, if you transfer your Citi ThankYou® Points to travel partners like Emirates, Air France, KLM, JetBlue, or Virgin Atlantic, you'll find even greater value in its welcome offer.

Our goal is to help you explore the world affordably and experience life changing travel by maximizing miles and points. Our team of travel and credit card experts is here to help you make decisions about which cards belong in your wallet. Based on your travel goals, we offer unbiased advice to help you make the best choices. Keep in mind that our suggestions require responsible credit card use.
Here at Daily Drop, we score cards based on six different categories: annual fee, welcome offer, point redemption value, rewards rates, benefits, and travel protections. You’ll notice that APR is not considered because we never recommend carrying a credit card balance if your goal is to maximize miles and points for travel. While these scores are opinion-based, our team has earned and redeemed millions of miles and points and has traveled to almost every country in the world. After all, we wouldn’t be Daily Drop if we weren’t practicing what we preach.
The Citi Strata Premier℠ Card is an excellent choice for travelers and everyday spenders alike. It offers versatile rewards and a variety of redemption options, making it a highly valuable card with a very small annual fee. If you're looking to earn points on your everyday purchases and redeem them for travel (our best advice), gift cards, or even cash back, the Strata Premier is a strong contender. The points from the welcome offer alone can be redeemed for $700 in gift cards at thankyou.com or transferred to Citi’s airline partners for even greater value (again…your best option).
With the Strata Premier, you earn 3x points on air travel, hotels, gas stations, restaurants, and supermarkets, and 1x points on all other purchases, which means you can quickly accumulate points on your everyday spending, making it easy to save up for your next vacation or other rewards. This is my go-to card for gas, groceries and restaurants. It’s like Citi’s version of the Sapphire Preferred card which I don’t own. The only caveat I see with this card is that the $100 off benefit is difficult and may not be worth it to use. You may find you are getting a better deal elsewhere for a hotel. Overall, I highly recommend this card. I would personally use the 1:2 choice hotels transfer and stay in some pretty decent places in Scandinavia.
When it comes to Citi ThankYou points the best way to maximize your points is to redeem them with travel.
[.dontreco] We don’t recommend: Redeeming points for statement credits or cash back [.dontreco]
While it’s possible to use your points for statement credits or cash back, the value per point is generally lower compared to other redemption options. You’ll get more value by using your points for travel or gift cards.
[.sometimesreco] We sometimes recommend: Redeeming points for gift cards [.sometimesreco]
Redeeming points for gift cards can offer decent value, especially if you can catch promotions that boost the redemption rate. However, it’s important to compare the value you’re getting to ensure you’re making the most of your points.
[.alwaysreco] We always recommend: Transferring points to airline partners [.alwaysreco]
The best value often comes from transferring points to Citi’s airline partners. This can provide significant savings on flights, especially for international travel or premium cabin bookings. Keep an eye on transfer bonuses to maximize your points even further.
But how can I actually transfer my Citi ThankYou points?
Transferring your ThankYou points is a super simple process. Simply log in to your Citi account and click on “points” in the top right corner. Then, you’ll see three dots on the top of the screen. Click those and select “transfer points to partners.” From there, you’ll be able to view any bonuses and available transfer options. Let the travel commence!
Oh yeah, did we mention that the Strata Premier has possibly the best list of transfer partners in the world? In case you need convincing, here’s that list:
This one is a little complicated, so bear with me. Nate booked a first-class Lufthansa flight using miles and points. And really, you could do the same thing with the Strata Premier. Now I know Lufthansa isn’t partnered with any of the major programs we talk about (i.e. Chase, American Express, etc.). But, they are part of Star Alliance — and so are Air Canada, United, and Singapore (all of which are transfer partners to Citi ThankYou Points). So hypothetically, you could transfer your ThankYou Points to one of those airlines and use those points to book the same sweet seat in the sky. Check out that alliteration. Why? When combined with the Venture X, the Strata Premier offers a well-rounded option for travel perks and rewards. The Venture X card is known for its premium travel benefits, such as airport lounge access, annual travel credits, and enhanced rewards on travel bookings. On the other hand, the Strata Premier focuses on earning ThankYou points that can be used for a variety of travel-related redemptions, often at a favorable rate. Together, these two cards allow you to cover a broad spectrum of spending categories, ensuring that you earn significant rewards not only on travel but also on everyday purchases. This combination gives you access to both luxury benefits and versatile points-earning potential.
Why? The Strata Premier pairs really well with the Citi Double Cash Card, creating a solid rewards strategy that enhances both everyday spending and travel benefits. The Double Cash Card offers a straightforward 2% cash back on all purchases—1% when you buy and 1% when you pay. This cashback can be converted into Citi ThankYou points, which can then be transferred to the Strata Premier. By doing so, cardholders can take advantage of the Strata Premier's higher redemption value on travel-related expenses, including flights and hotel stays. This pairing allows you to maximize rewards on routine purchases while also making your points work harder when it’s time to travel.
For frequent travelers, the Strata Premier offers unmatched value and versatility. Earning 3x points on air travel and hotels means you can accumulate points pretty quickly on your travel expenses. The ability to transfer ThankYou® Points to Citi’s airline partners opens up opportunities for valuable redemptions, often providing more value than using points for other purposes. Plus, the lack of foreign transaction fees makes this card an ideal companion for international trips. With travel protections like trip cancellation and interruption insurance, as well as car rental insurance, this card has your back. If you’re into playing the miles and points game, holding the Strata Premier could open up some different point transfer opportunities for a very small fee.
If your daily routine includes frequent trips to supermarkets, restaurants, and gas stations, the Strata Premier could be perfect for you. With 3x points on these categories, you can quickly rack up ThankYou® Points on your everyday expenses. Whether you’re grocery shopping, dining out, or fueling up, this card rewards you very nicely for your spending. Plus, the flexibility of the ThankYou® Rewards program means you can redeem points in a way that best suits your needs, whether for travel, gift cards, or cash back.
Here’s a good rule of thumb: You probably shouldn’t own a credit card if you: (1) have a bad credit score, (2) are a non-U.S. resident (for this particular card), and (3) cannot control your spending. If your credit score is below 700, you'll need to improve it before applying for travel credit cards, as approval for the best ones, like the Strata Premier, is unlikely. Be honest with yourself: if a new credit card will tempt you to overspend, it's best to avoid it. Credit cards are crucial for earning miles and points, but they require responsible use.
An excellent credit score of 670 - 850 is recommended for the Citi Premier℠ Card. If you have a strong credit history and are ready to commit to a versatile rewards card, this could be a great fit.
