🥂 Why you should always bid on business class

It’s no joke that business-class seats are highly coveted. But sometimes, they cost $8,000 a piece, or there’s just no award availability on a given route. 😫

As you move through the stages of grief, you finally reach acceptance and select your basic-ass economy seat for your upcoming, overnight, 12-hour flight (and by you, I mean me… this was my flight).

However, because I was flying from Hong Kong (HKG) to Vancouver (YVR) with Air Canada, I received this beautiful email about a week before my scheduled flight:

Interesting… 🤔 

Some airlines offer an upgrade bidding process where you can use points or cash (depending on the airline) to bid for the chance to make your life a whole lot better.

Air Canada is one airline that features this, but other notable airlines have their own versions:

• Virgin Atlantic

• Lufthansa

• Singapore Airlines

• Hawaiian Airlines

• Etihad

• Aer Lingus

I highlight this because the number of promo and other miscellaneous emails I get from airlines often leads me to do a quick swipe into my trash without giving them a second glance — so you could miss out on being alerted to the chance to bid to upgrade!

My flight's starting bid was just $560 Canadian dollars, so about $394 USD.

Wut. 🤯

For a twelve-and-a-half-hour flight in Air Canada’s stellar business class?? No freaking way.

I likely wouldn’t get it for that low, but what the heck — I’m going to bid the absolute bare minimum and just let it play out. 

I put this potential charge on The Platinum Card® from American Express so I’d at least earn around 2,000 Membership Rewards points thanks to its 5x earning rate on direct flight purchases.

And lo and behold, a few days later, I received the notification that my bid had been accepted, and I was going to be flying home (and actually sleeping!) in style.

My seat, y’all. 👇

This is all to say that if you’re flying an airline that offers this perk, you should:

1. Always check your emails, and don’t ignore what looks like a last-minute promo email from the airline.

2. Always bid for business class — you might just get a premium seat for super cheap!
