Our Take

If you’re loyal to Delta or even fly with them a few times per year, the Delta SkyMiles® Platinum Amex is a card that should probably be on your radar. Not only does it earn great rewards, but you'll also get abetter airport experience with free checked bags, priority boarding, and a jumpstart toward elite status.

Personally, I think of this card like the “middle child” of the Delta Amex lineup (but in a good way). It offers way more value than the Gold card, especially if you're chasing Medallion Status, and it has better fees than the Reserve. And let’s not forget about the annual companion certificate. If you play your cards right, that perk alone can easily pay for the annual fee. Plus, the ability to earn MQDs through spend is a huge win for anyone wanting elite status without flying 24/7.  So yeah, if you fly Delta more than once or twice a year and want better perks and faster status, the Platinum might be your perfect match.

How to make the most of your

Delta SkyMiles® Platinum American Express Card

If you want to squeeze the most value out of this card, your best bet is to use it for Delta flights, hotels, and when chasing elite status.

[.dontreco] We don’t recommend: Using miles for merchandise or gift cards [.dontreco]

The value here is… rough. You’ll usually get less than 1 cent per mile, which isn’t great.

[.sometimesreco] We sometimes recommend: Using miles for Pay with Miles bookings [.sometimesreco]

This gives you about 1 cent per mile, which is decent, especially for last-minute travel, but it’s not the most valuable way to redeem.

[.alwaysreco] We always recommend: Booking award flights (especially international or partner redemptions) [.alwaysreco]

You’ll get the best bang for your miles when you redeem them for flights, especially in premium cabins or with partners like Air France, KLM, and Virgin Atlantic. And since this card helps you rack up MQDs and earn status faster, you can even pair award redemptions with Medallion perks.

Transfer Partners

Delta doesn’t use a traditional transferable currency like American Express Membership Rewards, meaning you earn Delta SkyMiles directly. But you can still use your SkyMiles on Delta’s partner airlines through the SkyTeam alliance and other global partners. A few of the airlines you can book using your SkyMiles include Air France, KLM, Aeromexico, Virgin Atlantic, and others.

Best Complementary Cards

American Express® Gold Card

Why? The Delta Platinum is great for travel, but it falls a little flat on everyday spend categories like groceries and dining. That’s where the Amex Gold comes in. Pairing these two cards gives you a super solid combo: 4x points at restaurants (worldwide, on up to $50K in purchases) and U.S. supermarkets (up to $25,000 in purchases per year) with the Gold, and Delta perks galore with the Platinum.

The Platinum Card® from American Express

Why? This card gives you access to Delta Sky Clubs when flying Delta, which the Delta Platinum card doesn’t (unless you pay a fee). You’ll also get access to Centurion Lounges, a massive list of travel credits, and premium travel protections. Use the Delta Platinum for your flight perks and MQD earnings, and the Amex Platinum for luxury lounge access and better hotel benefits.

Who Should Get The

Delta SkyMiles® Platinum American Express Card

?

1. The Aspiring Medallion

If you’re dreaming of elite status with Delta but don’t fly enough to rack up MQDs the traditional way, this card is a solid option. With the 2,500 MQD Headstart and 1 MQD per $20 spent, you can close that gap faster. Add in perks like priority boarding and free checked bags, and you’re well on your way to Silver or even Gold Medallion status. And, this card is also great if you’re loyal to Delta but not ready to go full Reserve mode. It gives you status boosts, valuable travel benefits, and a lower annual fee compared to the Reserve. And if you decide to level up in the future, this card makes for a great stepping stone.

2. The Annual Vacationer

Maybe you’re not flying every week for work, but you do take a few big trips a year. The annual companion certificate can easily pay for the card by itself, and the baggage perks mean no more fees at check-in. If you're just looking to maximize PTO while flying with Delta, this one if for you.

Who Should Not Get The

Delta SkyMiles® Platinum American Express Card

?

Here’s a good rule of thumb: You probably shouldn’t own a credit card if you: (1) have a bad credit score, (2) are a non-U.S. resident (for this particular card), and (3) cannot control your spending. If your credit score is below 670, you'll need to improve it before applying for travel credit cards, as approval for the best ones, like the Delta Platinum Amex, is unlikely. Be honest with yourself: if a new credit card will tempt you to overspend, it's best to avoid it. Credit cards are crucial for earning miles and points, but they require responsible use.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Delta Amex Platinum the same as Amex Platinum?

Nope, Delta Amex Platinum and Amex Platinum are two seperate cards. One is built for Delta flyers, and the other is a premium travel card with perks across airlines and hotels. They’re both “Platinum,” but totally different cards.

Who can get the Delta Platinum American Express Card?

Anyone with a good credit score and some form of income can apply for the Delta SkyMiles® Platinum American Express Card. You don’t need to be a frequent flyer or business owner. If you’re eligible for most travel cards, you’ve got a solid shot.

Does Delta Platinum get lounge access?

The Delta Amex Platinum doesn’t come with free lounge access, but you can pay to enter a Delta Sky Club when flying Delta. For unlimited access, you’ll need to look at a higher-tier card like the Amex Platinum.

Is it worth it to upgrade to Delta Amex Platinum?

If you fly Delta a few times a year and can use benefits like the companion certificate, priority boarding, and a free checked bag, the Delta Platinum is worth considering, especially if you want to earn toward Medallion Status faster.

Does Amex Platinum have any benefits with Delta?

Yes, if you hold the Amex Platinum and are flying Delta, you get 10 complimentary visits per year to Delta Sky Clubs. After that, you’ll need to pay a fee or hit a spending threshold to unlock unlimited access.

Should I get a Delta Amex or regular Amex?

If you fly Delta often, the Delta Amex Platinum offers perks like free checked bags and a companion certificate that can easily outweigh the fee. If you want broader travel benefits across multiple airlines and better lounge access, a general Amex like the Platinum Card might be a better fit.
